Statement from Chris Hamilton, Chairman, WV Business & Industry Council, Concerning Odebrecht & Sogefi Announcements This Week

“The Business and Industry Council (BIC) wishes to congratulate and commend the Odebrecht Company, Governor Tomblin and other local and state officials for working together to bring one of the most significant economic development projects ever to our state.

The potential impact of an ethane cracker for increased development of our Marcellus Shale play and for the downstream businesses is incalculably positive.

Add to this the announcement earlier this week of the $20 million expansion of the Sogefi Group's Wayne County plant, and this has been a banner week for West Virginia.

The actual addition of at least 250 new jobs in Wayne County as well as the potential for thousands more should the cracker come online bodes well for our economy at a time when we are experiencing significant decreases in revenue and employment. The impact of these new ventures will provide much needed strength to our state's economy just when we need it most.

As one of West Virginia’s most involved and influential business development organizations, BIC pledges our support and advocacy to assist the parties in fully developing the potential of these projects.”

The West Virginia Business & Industry Council is comprised of more than 60 West Virginia trade associations and businesses, represents more than 395,000 state employees, across twenty-six separate industry categories. The organization’s goal is to enhance the business climate in West Virginia, and its members have been working to that end for more than three decades.
